Surveyor's Fight on Battle Creek |

The countryside remained dangerous. Three years later, on October 6, 1838, the Telegraph and Texas Register reported:
The country between the Colorado and Gonzales is very much infested with Indians. It is not safe to go from Columbus to Gonzales in companies smaller than five or ten persons. A citizen of the neighborhood by the name of Davis, who had been on the Colorado on business, was killed on the 11th inst. by Comanches while on his way home.
When the Indians searching for survivors moved on, Henderson, Button and Lane came out of hiding and headed for Tehuacana Hill where they ran across a band of Kickapoo. Henderson reported that he gave the band a Bowie knife to lead them to water then proceeded to give them a rifle to escort them to Parker's Fort. They arrived on October 12th and continued on to Old Franklin the next day.
