Despite the scale and speed of the project, not a single life was lost during the monument's construction.
The San Jacinto Museum of History is actually in the base of the San Jacinto Monument. But it's more than just a gateway to a great view. It's your gateway to Texas culture! From Mayan idols to Mexican manuscripts to Sam Houston's private dictionary (the word "temporize" is thoughtfully crossed through)—come see what you've been missing!
The museum was established not only to honor those who fought here in 1836, but also to re-visualize the history of Texas and the Spanish Southwest. It was created as a steward of history, and to promote friendship between Texas, Mexico, Spain, France and Latin America.
Special treasures can be found from Mexican Texas, the Texas revolution, and the Republic of Texas. But the museum also holds art and artifacts from the Spanish conquest, French Texas (a small collection), Spanish colonial life, the Mexican Revolution and the Anglo colonization of Mexican Texas. Texas's early statehood and the Civil War are also featured.

Albert and Ethel Herzstein Library,
The library is open by appointment on Fridays and two Saturdays a month, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Call 281.479.2421 or library@sanjacinto-museum.org to make an appointment. Use of the library is free to members, and is $5.00 for non-members.
All activities except the library are available seven days a week.
The Museum is closed Thanksgiving Day and December 24–25.

Directions
From the North
Take I45 south or 59 south to Beltway 8, Sam Houston Tollway, or continue south to Highway 610. Take Beltway 8 or Loop 610 east, and then south, crossing the Houston Ship Channel. Exit Highway 225 east, Texas Independence Highway, to La Porte. Exit Highway 134, Battleground Road.
From the South
Take I45 north to Beltway 8, Sam Houston Tollway. Take Beltway 8 east, and then north. Exit Highway 225 east, Texas Independence Highway, to La Porte. Exit Highway 134 Battleground Road.
From the East
Take I10 west to Crosby-Lynchburg Road, exit south, crossing the Houston Ship Channel by the Lynchburg Ferry to Battleground Road OR Take I10 west to Highway 146 south, crossing the Houston Ship Channel by the Fred Hartman Bridge. Exit Highway 225 west, Texas Independence Highway. Exit Highway 134 Battleground Road.
From the West
Take I10 east to Highway 610, east loop, or continue east to Beltway 8, east loop, Sam Houston Tollway. Take Loop 610 or Beltway 8 south, crossing the Houston Ship Channel. Exit Highway 225 east. Texas Independence Highway, to La Porte. Exit Highway 134, Battleground Road. When the road narrows to two lanes, remain in the left lane, continue through the stone park gates, and turn right into the park.
