Location of Site: On State Highway 101, eleven miles northeast of Sallisaw, Sequoyah County. Open Tuesday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.; closed Mondays and holidays. Dating from the 1830s, this log cabin was the home of George Guess-Sequoyah-the inventory of the Cherokee syllabary. Because of the development of a written language the Cherokees made rapid progress. Eventually a newspaper, the Cherokee Advocate, was published in both English and Cherokee which allowed the Cherokees to become better informed about world events than were many of their white neighbors. The log cabin is now preserved in a rock building to protect it from further deterioration. The above information is from the book, Mark of Heritage, by Muriel H. Wright, courtesy of Oklahoma Historical Society. |
