Mimbres Mountains

Back to Apacheria Forts

The following is from the book, Indian Wars, by Bill Yenne.

On May 29, 1879, a detachment of men from two companies of the 9th Cavalry led by Captain Charles Beyer and Lieutenant Henry Wright cornered Victorio on the continental divide in the Mimbres Mountains of New Mexico. An attempt to parley devolved into a shootout, in which Wright was saved from being captured by Sergeant Thomas Boyne, who earned the Congressional Medal of Honor for his action. The brief fight left one soldier dead, and two men on each side wounded. Victorio and his band managed to escape, but he was forced to abandon a large volume of food and other supplies.
