In the summer of 1830 Cherokee Chief John Smith led a war party south into Texas. A reported 125 Cherokees successfully assaulted a Tawakoni village near Mexia. After the Tawakonis took shelter in some nearby caves, the Cherokees built fires and smoked them out, cutting them down as they tried to escape. Back to Southern Plains Map |
