During 1863, Mr. Merrimond, who spent the night in San Saba, started home horseback and was driving a yoke of steers. At the time, he lived on the Colorado, twenty-three miles north and west of San Saba. After going only five miles, he was slain by the savages and the branch on which he was killed is called Merrimond Branch today because of this murder. It was about one week later before his body was found. Merrimond was buried without a coffin where he lay. The above story is from the book, The West Texas Frontier, by Joseph Carroll McConnell.
