Settled by German Immigrant families in 1846, many older
buildings retain traditional German styles. German is still spoken
occasionally, and old customs are regularly observed: Easter Fires,
Schuetzenfests (marksmanship tournaments), Oktoberfest, Kristkindl
Markt, and Kinderfest.
Points of Interest
Admiral Nimitz Museum and Historical Center, 210-997-4379,
340 E. Main Street. The Steamboat Hotel structure, originally built
in 1852, contains three floors of the Museum of the Pacific War, dedicated
to everyone who served in the Pacific under Admiral Nimitz. Features
of the building include the ballroom, and four original refurnished
guest rooms. The Japanese Garden of Peace is a gift from the people
of Japan. The History Walk of the Pacific War, located a block from
the garden, displays guns, planes, boats, tanks, etc. Nimitz Museum
Bookstore. Open 85 daily. Admission.
Bauer Toy Museum, 210-997-9394, 233 E. Main. Open 14:30
weekdays and Sunday. Saturday 105. Admission by donation. The
museum contains 3,000 toys, cars, trucks, lead soldiers, airplanes,
boats, dolls, guns, miniature village, a forty-foot diorama of the
Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol."
Becker Vineyards, 210-644-2681, Hwy 290 E, 11 miles,
right on Jenschke Lane. Open for tours and tastings MondaySaturday
105, Sunday 125. Features an antique saloon bar and wood
burning fireplace. Vineyard is surrounded by peach orchards and wildflower
fields.
Bell Mountain/Oberhellman Vineyards, 210-685-3297, Highway
16 N (14 miles). Open for tours, tastings and sales Saturday from
March through mid December from 105, with tours at 11, 1 and
3 and other times by appointment.

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, 915-247-3903. RR
965 N (18 miles). Park hours 8 AM10 PM daily. Admission. Hiking,
climbing, backpacking, camping, picnicking, nature study. Enchanted
Rock is among the oldest exposed rocks in North America. Group Picnic
area with a pavilion.
Fort Martin Scott Historic Site, 210-997-9895, 1606
E. Main, 2 miles east on Hwy. 290. Hours 95 Saturday and Sunday
year round except Christmas. Admission. Pre-Civil War military post
established in 1848 was the first U. S. Army frontier fort in Texas.
The fort was home to at least eight Civil War generals including Confederate
James Longstreet. Reconstruction includes the guardhouse, a civilian
log cabin and two officers' quarters. Visitor Center includes exhibits
about the post including documents and artifacts recovered from the
site.

Beers are brewed in the German brewing tradition; located in a restored
rock building.

Historic District includes "Sunday Houses,"
small structures usually with a sleeping loft reached by an outside
stairway, erected in town by farmers and ranchers to have a place
to stay when they came to buy needed staples, to sell their butter
and crops, visit on Saturdays and then attend church on Sundays.

AM10 PM remainder of year. Includes an 18-hole golf course,
two putting greens,swimming pool, baseball diamonds, volleyball and
tennis courts. Lake for boating (no motors) and fishing. Picnic areas
with BBQ grills, outdoor pavilions. Overnight camping areas.
LBJ State and National Historical ParksStonewall
area, 210-644-2252, Hwy 290 E, 16 miles. Hours 85 daily, except
Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Visitor center, park store, Behren's
"Dogtrot" Cabin (C. 1840s), outdoor amphitheater, nature
trail and Sauer Beckmann Living History Farmstead 84:30 daily),
depicting traditional German family living in the early 1900s. Exhibits,
movie, slide shows, hiking, wildlife displays, picnic and rest areas,
playground, dining hall, group picnic area, fishing, swimming, tennis,
baseball facilities. Tour buses to see the LBJ Ranch depart from the
state park visitor center.
Luckenbach, Texas, 210-997-3224, 5 miles southeast of
Fredericksburg off FM 1376, consists of a dancehall, bar and general
store. Dances are held monthly.
Pioneer Museum Complex, 210-997-2835, 309 W. Main. Hours
MondaySaturday 105; Sunday 15. Admission: $3 per
person (12 & up). The main museum building, the 1849 stone Kammlah
house and store, features eight furnished rooms, a wine cellar; three
pioneer kitchens with open hearths, a stone covered hof (yard). Other
buildings include the Fassel family limestone home furnished with
buggies, a smokehouse, a barn and blacksmith shop, the Walton-Smith
log cabin, the authentic Weber Sunday House, the one-room White Oak
schoolhouse, and the Fredericksburg Volunteer Fire Department Museum.
A home-cooked German meal is offered with a two week notice. Minimum

Round Up at Heard Ranch, 210-997-7217 or 824-3328, Tivydale
Rd. Show and meal by appointment. A cattle roundup where Heard Ranch
cowboys and vaqueros herd, rope, tie and brand calves for visiting
spectators. After the demonstration, cowboys answer questions and
converse with the guests. Includes a Texas style barbeque from the
chuck wagon.
Vereins Kirche Museum, 210-997-2835. Hours MondaySaturday
104, Sunday 14. Admission $1.50 per person (12 years and
up). Originally constructed in 1847 as a church, meeting hall, school,
and fort, this building is the landmark building of Fredericksburg.
Vereins Kirche translates to "Society Church." Features
pictures and artifacts about life in early Gillespie
