7 February 1871; Chico, Texas: About 50 miles east of Flat Top Mountain, in northeast present-day Wise County, Texas, Sgt. E.H. Cobb and 9 Texas Rangers ran into 40 Kiowas and Comanches who were well-armed with Henry rifles, six-shooters, and bows and arrows. The Indians moved back over a hill and into a stand of tall grass, and when Cobb's men topped the rise, the warriors tried to surround them. Cobb pulled him men back to a better position and fought them off.
The Rangers killed two Indians and wounded a few others. One Ranger, "Little Billy" Sorrels, was wounded.
