During 1860, Chapman was on a deer stand near Burton Spring in Jack County, alone, waiting for a deer. But the Indians came instead and murdered young Chapman before he could escape. He was buried by the side of the road leading to the Burton Ranch about one and a half miles from the place he was killed. Note: Before writing this section, the author interviewed A.M. Lasater, James Wood, Joe Fowler, B.L. Ham, and one or two others, who were living in Jack County when Chapman was killed.
