During 1860, Chapman was on a deer stand near Burton Spring in Jack County, alone, waiting for a deer. But the Indians came instead and murdered young Chapman before he could escape. He was buried by the side of the road leading to the Burton Ranch about one and a half miles from the place he was killed. Note: Before writing this section, the author interviewed A.M. Lasater, James Wood, Joe Fowler, B.L. Ham, and one or two others, who were living in Jack County when Chapman was killed. The above story is from the book, The West Texas Frontier, by Joseph Carroll McConnell. |
