Tom Cavness had just returned from the Civil War and was making his home with Edward Cavness. Edward lived on Cherokee Creek, three miles west of the present town of Cherokee, in San Saba County. One morning while Tom was out searching oxen near Vaughan Mountain, he was charged by Indians, who gave him a mortal wound with an arrow after chasing him for a considerable distance. Tom Cavness was found during the same day and buried in the cemetery near the present town of Cherokee. Note: Author interviewed J.C.
