During 1873, L.P. and Taylor Brooks, A.A. and W.F. Timmons, Lopez Conner, and a man named Stone, were building a rock fence, about ten miles west of Graham, when someone saw horsemen approaching. Since Uncle Archie Medlin and his cow men had been out several days on a roundup, at first, the boys thought the horsemen were they. At the time, the above citizens were sitting down on a little hill. In a few seconds L.P. Brooks said, It is Indians. So the citizens ran for their guns, and it seems the savages were much surprised. The Indians retreated over a little hill, and opened fire. About that time, the battle began, but as usual, lasted only a few minutes.
